What Percentage Calculator calculates

The calculator separates the three distinct percentage problems people conflate: taking a percentage of a number (25% of 80 = 20), expressing one number as a percentage of another (20 is 25% of 80), and measuring change between two numbers (80 → 100 is a 25% increase). Each mode has labeled boxes so the right question is obvious.

Why the numbers matter

Percentage mistakes are direction mistakes: a 25% increase followed by a 25% decrease doesn't return to the start (100 → 125 → 93.75), and 'X% of Y' vs 'X is what % of Y' get swapped constantly in discounts, marks, and reports. Separating the modes eliminates the most common error - answering the wrong question with the right arithmetic.

How the result is worked out

Pick the mode matching your question, fill the two known values, read the third. Everything recalculates as you type, in your browser.
