Why the numbers matter

BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis - useful precisely because it's simple and comparable. It flags when weight is likely outside the healthy range for your height, which is a reasonable prompt to pay attention. Where it misleads: muscular people score 'overweight' without excess fat, it says nothing about fat distribution, and standard cutoffs fit some populations better than others (several countries use lower thresholds for South Asian populations, for instance).

What BMI Calculator calculates

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The calculator does the unit conversions and the arithmetic, then places the result on the standard ranges: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5-24.9 (normal), 25-29.9 (overweight), 30+ (obese).

How the result is worked out

Enter height and weight in either unit system and read the BMI and category instantly. The healthy-range figure answers the more useful follow-up: what weight band corresponds to 'normal' for your height. Calculations run in your browser; nothing is stored.
